A recap from House of the Dragon’s premiere episode includes spoilers for … it’s a bit it’s House of the Dragon’s premiere episode. It’s basically what a recap should be. Do what you can to be successful.
We’re back. Every one of us -we’re back. HBO The Seven Kingdoms, you, and of course me the man who summarized Game of Thrones for NPR sometime in the past. We’re all here and back on our dragonscats.
I’ve put together a few useful guides to get us all in the right place However, the basic idea is: forget your knowledge as you don’t really need it all that much. House of the Dragon opens around 200 years prior to what happens in Game of Thrones. The 100 years old Targaryen Dynasty is at its peak, as the royal family is holding the reins of 10 full-grown dragons.
We begin our doors at Harrenhal, the vast ruined castle famously destroyed to death by Aegon the Conqueror, the founder of the Targaryen Dynasty, a century prior to. We’re watching what was known as the Great Council of 101 AC and the winner of the Iron Throne will be decided.
In this area: Rhaenys Targaryen, the queen’s daughter (she’s standing next to her husband, Corlys Velaryon who is also known as the Sea Snake We’ll see a lot more of Corlys Velaryon in the future).
In the corner is the grandson of the king, Viserys Targaryen standing alongside the wife of his Gemma Arryn who is expecting Their daughter Rhaenyra Targaryen. (I know I’m aware of it We’re barely two minutes into the show and there’s a Rhaenys and a Rhaenyra to fight. And that’s not even mentioning the fact that the majority of the characters have the same wig, which is long and platinum blonde. Welcome to the Targaryen Dynasty. Edgar Winter is coming.)
The Great Council chooses Viserys, even though Rhaenys is more seasoned, as the patriarchy is it isn’t completely predictable.

Opening credits! That does do notsend us zooming across the map of Westeros to explore models of the clockwork version of the many locations that will be featured in this episode. Instead, we simply look at the three-headed dragon’s sigil of House Targaryen.
It’s a hint the House of the Dragon’s chief conflict won’t be a raging battle, like GoT’s was, in an all-encompassing global battle that involved a variety of distant kingdoms and houses. The conflict lines will be drawn by the same family and in only a handful of familiar places. No map is necessary.
We have a view from the dragon’s eye of King’s Landing, which is appearing to be more precisely rendered in the present. It’s 172 years old but the servers in HBO’s VFX department have seen four years of improvements in the time since GoT was over and it’s obvious.
The massive domed structure that dominates the skyline? It’s far from it’s the Great Sept of Baelor, which won’t be constructed for a long time. This is the Dragonpit in Baelor, home to the dragons of the royal family.
We meet teenager Rhaenyra as well as her friend Alicent Hightower, daughter of Otto Hightower, who’s the Hand of the King. They pass across the courtyard of the Red Keep that Cersei will transform into a massive What on the World is Carmen Sandiego? board, centuries later.
The show has more of its pieces of chess on the board The queen Gemma is expecting a baby again and gives the shrewd Rhaenyra the truly awful “lie back and think of Westeros” motherly advice. Corlys Velaryon (told you!) warns you that some members of the Free Cities have formed an alliance known as the Triarchy and their apex — Craghas Drahar who is also known as Crabfeeder -is brutally ridding the Stepstones (a series of islands located between Westeros in the west and Essos) from pirates. You can put a pin inside the stepstones and it will return

That massive domed structure dominating the skyline? It’s not actually an actual Great Sept of Baelor, which isn’t expected to be completed for a long time. It’s the Dragonpit which is where dragons belong to the royal family.
